COP27: GMA UPDATE

  • COP27 President, Sameh Hassan Shoukry is currently in Germany, meeting at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) HQ to set the agenda for COP27.

  • Indications are that a key focus for COP27 will be to put more focus on support for developing nations.

  • The US Chamber of Commerce hosted an event late January titled ‘Building momentum to COP27’ and the following take-outs should be noted:

    • Egypt’s Ambassador to Brazil and Lead Climate Negotiator, Wael Aboulmagd gave a preview of what can be expected at COP27:

      • Focus will be on implementation on all aspects of the Paris Agreement which includes pursuing more ambitious NDCs from all countries and following up pledges and commitments made at Glasgow;

      • Referring to mitigation and emissions reductions, emphasis will be placed on demonstration of tangible action as opposed to action plans and commitments;

      • Considering COP27 will be held in an African region, a promise to Greater Africa and the developing world that Adaptation, which is often a burden to these regions, would be prioritised in addition to Climate Finance.

    • John Kerry, US Special Envoy on Climate Change presented at this event stating: “The world is "not on a good track" to meet a global goal to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and “must intensify efforts to move away from fossil fuels this decade” and that, “action countries have taken do not meet the severity of the problem”, even though "a huge amount of good" came out of the COP26 summit in Glasgow last November, including “concluding the ‘rule book’ for executing the Paris Climate Agreement.”

    • It was stated that the private sector is integral to action and there was a strong focus on strengthening
      public-private sector collaboration on climate challenge
