Weekly Round-Up: Repping the women, Got Milk? and the quest for sustainability.

Today’s GMA Global Insight Call was about inspiring sector action and change as Laura Ryan, removed her GMA hat (only momentarily) and shared, as Meat Business Women co-founder, the top level insights from the newly launched Gender Representation in the Meat Sector Report.

The report uncovered that women make up 36% of the workforce in the businesses that participated in the study and that women are heavily represented in the most junior roles in the sector and under-represented at every level above junior level. It tells us that women hold just 14% of board-level director roles and 5% of the chief executive roles.

To be blunt, the meat sector is lagging behind other sectors in creating an industry and workplaces that attract and promote female talent. In doing so, it is failing to reap the rewards that come from creating a diverse workforce.

GMA exists to facilitate collaboration and tap into different ways of thinking. Not only does this report go a long way to address the gender imbalance within the global sector, it also can provide tools for us to enhance the perception of our industry from an outsiders/public perspective - hence, the sharing of top level insights to our members today.

Highlights of today’s GMA summary notes*:

  • One of the big ‘plant-based protein’ companies sets it’s sights on dairy and eggs.

  • New claims, standards and marketing out of Ireland and New Zealand.

  • Who’s winning in the race for carbon neutrality and how some fast-food chains are calling out the carbon footprint of their menus.

  • Future of restaurants post-Covid and supporting farmers through daily challenges.

*Each fortnight our members receive a recording of the insight call in addition to a three page summary which also showcases what our community is up to and the latest industry commentary. To get a feel for what this looks like or to join our conversations real-time, say hello.
